Hi! So Glad You're Here.

Podcast Goal:

According to the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA; 2019), 94% of currently practicing speech-language pathologists identify as White which often results in client-clinician mismatch. This is one of the main reasons why this podcast has come to life. The goal of this podcast is to increase diversity in the field of speech-language pathology. We will focus on providing resources and tips on how to navigate this field as a multilingual/multicultural and/or first-generation student. You will notice that the first episodes are focused on scope of practice. This is to introduce the field and provide information about the different settings in which an SLP can practice.

About the Host:

I am Stephanie Good Salas, the host. I have a B.S. in communicative disorders and I am currently pursuing a master's in speech language pathology at Northern Illinois University. I was born in Mexico and moved to the US at the age of sixteen. I was an undocumented teenager who did not know how to speak English and who had big dreams. My path has not been easy, but it has definitely taught me how to be resilient. The idea of creating this podcast came from the struggle, fear, and insecurities I've experienced throughout this journey. The creation of this podcast would not have been possible without the knowledge and support of my mentor Dr. Milijana Buac. She is a multilingual assistant  professor at Northern Illinois University. She immigrated to the US on a refugee status at the age of 11 and was also an English language learner.

Thank you so much for listening!
